Thanks for sharing this story. I totally relate, especially on those days when, as we do in our profession, I'm building a relationship and have to let someone know I have a wife and not a husband, or when I have to do my best to read the cues about being open when a social invitation is extended. Our profession is so enmeshed with the people in it - our donors become our friends - and having to be vulnerable and authentic is a theme that's defined this intersection of the personal and professional for me. Some days it is exhausting, but many days it reminds me that I'm in this work because of the community-building, and that our world is still filled with great people. Any idea what tool or tools (including marketing automation - like Marketo, HubSpot - that may power this) they may have? Nobody likes to say "no" twice. Is it a budget issue? Here's a low cost/free alternative. Is it a staffing issue? Can we recruit people from other teams/departments or use an intern/volunteers? Before our big events when I run through my minute-to-minute schedule with the caterer, lights, and sound folks, I tell them these are our aspirational times. Skidmore has aspirant schools we compare ourselves too, and when at the end of the night we're exactly on time, I feel like Harvard! My greatest pet pleasure: when the audience of 300+ donors gave our student speaker a standing ovation after hearing her story of how she got to Skidmore. If someone tears up with emotion I've hit a home run. I actually am revamping our donor recognition dinner this year. In the past, we have done the traditional, sit-down dinner with patient speakers. But attendance was decreasing and I felt the format was becoming dull even as we added what we thought were exciting elements.

This year, we are flipping it completely - moving to a different day of the week and hosting a wine tasting with unique food pairings with mocktails for those who don't drive. We are weaving in impact messaging through animated videos instead of speakers that will play in between flights.
